Why I won’t go see Brokeback Mountain!

We were at dinner, preparing ourselves to go see the excellent movie Syrianna, when one of the women asked:
“Are any of you guys going to see Brokeback Mountain?”
“No,”
“No,”
“No,”
We all replied. Then there was the ever-so-slight accusation of homophobia. But seriously, would any of us go see it if was about a more traditonal couple? No, no, and heck no. It would still be a chick-flick.
Ang Lee, the director, makes everything he touches into a chick-flick, even the “Not-so-incredible Hulk.” His one great movie, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, was severly marred by the long bodice-ripping flashback stuck randomly into the middle of the movie. So, unless it turns out these gay cowboys are also doing crazed martial arts sequences, I’m not seeing that movie.

    In terms of a chick flick, I’d say it’s a love story set in the West, not really a chick flick. The very hot Anne Hathaway has a raunchy, topless sex scene in the back of a Buick.

When a film is so highly reviewed, and a comic (Jay Leno) asks an audience (after a bigoted remark) if they have seen “Brokeback Mountain” and NOBODY CLAPS), it tells me one of two things; either people will not admit they have seen it out of fear of legitimized homophobia, or they are themsoelves homophobes. The lack of commensurate mass distribution and appropriate public response is proof we have not really gone far since the early 80s in the real progress of gay acceptance. Gays are still the most hated and feared minority despite the fact straights may think they are funny!

    Anyone that says the real reason they wouldn’t see “Brokeback Mountain” is because its a chick flick, is simply ashamed to admit they still bigots.
